Material Design

Essenza

Essenza is a multilayer plywood panel designed for TABU. Its layered construction allows for efficient, low cost production while reducing the material waste typically associated with this kind of manufacturing. More than a surface, Essenza invites the viewer to look deeper. What begins as a cubic composition transforms into a pattern of triangles, revealing a hidden visual language through the making process itself.

Material identity
By varying wood species and tones within each layer, the system can generate multiple veneers, each with its own distinct character and identity.

Production Process

From block to veneer

The production story is part of the design. Each step shows how a compact wooden block is cut, sectioned, rotated and assembled until the final veneer pattern appears.
01

Starting block

A 75 mm thick solid wood block is formed by 150 veneers, 0.5 mm each, over a 3060 × 650 mm format.

02

Longitudinal cuts

The block is cut into modules through four longitudinal cuts and two transverse cuts, preparing identical sections.

Essenza step 2
03

Triangular prisms

The resulting modules are sectioned along their diagonals, producing triangular prisms and the key geometric logic of the pattern.

Essenza step 3
04

Assembly

The prisms are rotated and glued together following the layout, then cut transversely to divide the block in half.

Final veneer

The final block reaches veneer-ready dimensions and reveals the layered triangular composition that defines Essenza.
